Whilst snowshoeing on a Wanderlust Tour several weeks ago, one of my guests spotted something rather unusual hanging from a tree nearby- an old iron leg trap.This trap was used in the more recent years of fur trapping here in Central Oregon. Yet, it hearkens the mind back to the days of fur trappers like Peter Skene Ogden ranging the rivers and lakes for beaver pelts near the Deschutes in 1826.

I went on a hike along the Metolius River in the Central Oregon Cascades yesterday. The first blanketing of snow fell on Central Oregon's Cascades over the October 3-5 weekend. Through the clouds partial views reveal snow-white volcanoes from Bend. In Central Oregon, we tend to name things very literally. For instance, there is a large butte north of Bend that is black in color. So we call it Black Butte. The High Cascade Lakes in Central Oregon are busy right now. Sparks still has water which is a little unusual, as it gets pretty shallow this time of year.
