1. What was your favorite subject in school?
In high school my favorite subject was history. At university, I would have to say my favorite subject was a tossup between a class called “Endangered Species, Society, and Sustainability” and another class called “Issues in Natural Resource Conservation.” I took them concurrently during the 2008 presidential election (“Drill, baby, drill!”) and fondly remember the, um, “spirited” discussions that were facilitated in class by my instructors.
2. Your top three favorite Beers made in C.O.
How about my favorite beer from each of my favorite breweries?
Fave brewery is, naturally, Deschutes Brewery. The downtown brewpub crafts the Rooster Cream Ale, the consumption of which can be likened to drinking liquid silk. Rich, creamy, delicious, nitrogenated, beer-flavored silk that contains 7.2% ABV. Pair with the Brewery Burger or Deschute’s famous Thai Wings of Fire (or Thai Wings of Death, if you’re allergic to peanuts).
Second fave brewery is Bend Brewing Company. I only ever order one specific beer there: the Hop Head. But be ye forewarned! It contains 9% ABV, and the saying "Hop Head hops straight to your head" is true. Goes great with the BBC’s legendary vegetarian nachos.
Finally, third place goes to 10 Barrel Brewing Company’s Apocalypse IPA. Combining a smooth 65 IBUs and a relatively tame ABV of 6.5%, this beer is best paired with another one.
3. Your most memorable experience while out on a Wanderlust Tour?
Watching the Perseid meteor shower from a canoe on Sparks Lake last summer while the International Space Station flew over us.
4. What book are you reading right now?
Manual of Ornithology: Avian Structure and Function, by Noble Proctor and Patrick Lynch.
5. Nugget of cultural history about Bend that always amazes you
New York City had electric street lamps by 1892. Bend wasn’t electrified until 1917. That’s 25 years later, y’all…
6. Most heavily relied upon piece of gear that you own
Gerber pocket knife. I use it for everything from splitting kindling on moonlight canoe tours to opening beers to opening mail. In all honesty, it’s probably the beer application that sees the most use…
7. Wanderlust Tours just received honorable mention as Central Oregon's Best Green Business- What do you do to back up your green ethic?
I buy locally, I don’t eat at chain restaurants, and harass people for littering in the park. It’s fun. You should try it. Just make sure that your victim is smaller than you are. My favorite tactic is to immediately pick up the object of offense and loudly say something along the lines of, “Excuse me, I believe that you ACCIDENTALLY dropped this piece of litter. Would you like it back?”
8. Do you volunteer your time anywhere
Cave cleanups, river cleanups, guest lecturing at the university.
9. What advice would you have for someone visiting Bend for the first time?
Roundabouts can be confusing at first, but they’re highly efficient when used properly. That said, remember that it’s a “yield” sign, not a “stop” sign. And use your turn signal upon exiting the roundabout. Because if you can’t operate your turn signal, what makes you think you can operate the rest of your car? Safety first friends.
10. Favorite sound to hear in nature
A yellow-headed blackbird (Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus) proclaiming his territory from atop a rush on Hosmer Lake.
