Name, Age, Point of Origin: Jeff, 28 years young, Wisconsin!
1. What was your favorite subject in school? I was drawn to most of the sciences but always enjoyed physics over all. How can the laws and equations that govern all matter not amaze you?
2. Your top three favorite Beers made in C.O. This is like asking what is your favorite grain of sand in the ocean – that is if sand were an eclectic mixture of taste bud satisfying delight. If I was forced to name a few: Cascade Lakes 20 Inch Brown, Silver Moon Badlands Bitter, Deschutes Red Chair IPA and McMenamins Rubinator.
3. Your most memorable experience while out on a Wanderlust Tour? I have been on several spectacular new moon Star Light canoe trips where I have been gripped with pure amazement. The High Cascade’s elevation, lack of light pollution and air quality make for a view of the heavens that is hard to surpass.
4. What book are your reading right now.? Beyond the Hundredth Meridian by Wallace Stegner – It’s an account of John Wesley Powell’s exploration of the west and his views on water rights in the arid regions he encountered.
5. Nugget of cultural history about Bend that always amazes you? I am enthralled by the knowledge that humanity has been in the area for at least 14,000 years. As I look around at the landscape of volcanic features that is Central Oregon, I can’t help but be astonished that many of the mountains and cinder cones were active during that time. Ancient humanity literally saw the hills being born out of fire and ash.
6. Most heavily relied upon piece of gear that you own? While I am proud of the quiver of gear I own for a plethora of activities, I go almost nowhere without a sharp pocketknife. It’s uses are evident and too many to list…
7. What do you do to back up your green ethic? My roommates and friends would agree that I am notorious for wandering the house unplugging unused electronics and turning off lights. In other words I am the commissioner of the Power Police.
8. Do you volunteer your time anywhere? I’m not involved formally with any charities, but I find it depressing that you cannot go anywhere in this world without finding trash. I’ve made a life long commitment to pick up as much as I can anytime I come across it.
9. What advice would you have for someone visiting Bend for the first time? Start planning your second trip before you even get here – there is simply too much to do in Central Oregon in a lifetime much less a single trip.
10. Favorite sound to hear in nature As a kid from the Midwest, I love the sound of loons lulling me to sleep at night - to me it is as Americana as apple pie.
